Coconut oil is one of the most versatile natural remedies you can ever use. We’re all familiar with its many qualities when it comes to skin and hair care. What a lot of people don’t know, however, is that coconut oil can be an amazing way of keeping your teeth healthy. Researchers have found that coconut oil is a better choice than toothpaste, as it’s entirely natural, while toothpaste contains plenty of chemicals. Dental health is paramount to maintaining overall health since a lot of illnesses can stem from oral infections.
A study at the Athlone Institute recently proved that coconut oil is the best type of dental health. This is mostly due to its powerful antibacterial properties, meaning coconut oil is quite effective at eliminating bacteria.
Some of the most common causes of tooth decay in both adults and children are the streptococcus and s mutans. Dr. Damien Brady of the Athlone Institute claims that coconut oil can be an amazing substitute for the chemical-laden products for dental hygiene. It is also a potent weapon in the fight against microbial infections, without resorting to the use of antibiotics. Most commercial toothpastes contain a whole host of chemicals, including but not limited to:\ fluoride, sodium lauryl sulfate, aspartame, and triclosan. These chemicals can have negative effects on your health. For example, triclosan can disrupt the work of the endocrine glands, while sodium lauryl sulfate can affect the taste buds negatively.
A great way to avoid this is to use a homemade, all natural coconut oil toothpaste. Following is the recipe.
– Half cup of coconut oil
– 2-3 tablespoons of baking soda
– 15-30 drops of essential oil (peppermint, eucalyptus)
Combine the ingredients until you get a smooth paste and use this in place of your usual toothpaste.
Another interesting technique to try is oil pulling. This has been practiced for a very long time and it’s a great way to improve and maintain dental health. Take a tablespoon of coconut oil in the morning before eating or drinking anything. Swirl it in your mouth for at least 5 and up to 20 minutes (start with 5 and slowly increase over time). Spit out the oil in a trash can so it doesn’t clog up your drain when it solidifies. Use this technique to not only whiten, but also clean your teeth.
